Cows and animal welfare: is tethering cruelty to animals? – Bavaria

Johann Waldschütz’s farm is an Upper Bavarian idyll. The oldest parts of the dashing Einfirsthof on the outskirts of Miesbach date back to the late 16th century. This is exactly how long the listed property has been in the family’s possession. Waldschütz is an organic farmer and has 26 dairy cows. “My cows are doing really well, they are out in the pasture for most of the year, where they can run around as they want,” says the 44-year-old. “We have a lot of guests on the farm, everyone admires our cows.” The cows are only in the barn for milking and in the cold winter months. In a so-called tethered stall. Like many dairy farmers with a tied stall, Waldschütz therefore feels under massive pressure.
