A couple from England buys a scratch card and wins the equivalent of 1.2 million euros. But the money didn’t bring them happiness – on the contrary.

Michael (39) and Charlotte (37) from Spalding, England, were said to have been together for three months when they went shopping Buy scratch cards. A suggestion from Michael, as he will say later. Because in the end, Charlotte separates from Michael – and claims money for herself alone.

“Charlotte said she didn’t have any money left over for scratch cards, but I replied that I would transfer the money to her,” he told British newspaper The Sun. Because he didn’t have his bank card with him, Charlotte paid at the checkout herself.

At home, the two scratched open the window on the scratch card and discovered something incredible: they had won a million pounds. The couple celebrates the win with a vacation by the sea. They wanted to buy a new house and a new car. Michael wants to have transferred his share of the ticket in the meantime. Video footage from a surveillance camera that the lottery company has is intended to prove this.

His wife leaves him “as if out of nowhere” – including winning millions

These little details are important today. Bad luck in games, good luck in love – or vice versa? In the case of Michael from England, his girlfriend Charlotte is gone in the end and so is the money. She left him from one day to the next “as if out of nowhere,” he told the English magazine “Mirror.” She claimed all of the scratch ticket winnings for herself. He is aware that she paid for the ticket with her bank account, but the winnings “should be split in half for moral reasons.”

The lottery company interviewed the couple separately and also had the ticket seller confirm that Michael had transferred the money, as seen on the cameras. Ex-girlfriend Charlotte, however, asserts the opposite.

“A million pounds has never brought so much harm”

A relative is said to have told the Sun: “A million pounds has never brought so much harm.” The win ruined the last three months for Charlotte and her family. “Mike has no right to the money. He is not a nice person. Charlotte won, she paid for the ticket. The case is closed,” it continues.

And that’s what it is: After weeks of negotiations – and a change of operator – the lottery company comes to a conclusion: only the person whose name is on the ticket is entitled to the prize. If the couple from England had wanted to share the profits, a contract would have had to be drawn up beforehand. She gets the full profit, he gets nothing.
