26 years ago, visitors to Munich’s Prinzregententheater witnessed a miracle. The then 31-year-old countertenor David Daniels sang the ruthless dictator Nero, who would stop at nothing to be able to marry Poppea, who was loved to the point of erotic madness, as Caesar. This musically and scenically outstanding “Incoronazione di Poppea” by Claudio Monteverdi proved for the first time that a countertenor can sing as overwhelmingly as only normal tenors can.
