Corsica placed on orange wind alert

Corsica was placed on Monday in orange wind alert by Météo-France from Monday 4 p.m. to 11 p.m. for gusts which could exceed 120 km / h.

“In Corsica, very strong gusts of wind will occur on Monday evening in the mountains and on the eastern plain” with gusts of up to “120 to 140 km / h”, specifies the meteorological organization which also placed the island in yellow alert waves-submergence and avalanche.

Gusts at 160 km/h

The Haute-Corse prefecture had indicated in a press release on Sunday, when the island was still only placed on yellow vigilance, that the westerly wind was going to “blow (Monday afternoon) over the whole of the island and is strengthening(r) on the reliefs, the eastern part of the island and the western coast” with gusts that can reach “140 to 160 km / h on Cap Corse”.

“By breaking”, the gusts will be “between 100 and 120 km / h in the eastern part of the island of Bastia in Solenzara. On the west coast, they will reach 80 to 100 km / h”, specified the prefecture, stressing that “the maximum wind” was to occur “from the middle of the day until the evening” before gradually weakening during the night from Monday to tuesday. The prefecture “recommends the greatest caution in travel and in the practice of outdoor activities”.
