Psychologist: Despite the risk, the habituation effect sets in

From the point of view of the psychologist Donya Gilan, many people are getting used to the ever-increasing incidences and new infections. “It’s like getting used to it,” said Gilan from the Leibniz Institute for Resilience Research in Mainz of the German Press Agency. This could mean that certain measures are no longer followed so strictly. “On the other hand, of course, it also has a de-escalating effect in terms of fear and worry.”

According to Gilan, after the long time in the pandemic, despite the high risk, a habituation effect sets in, as can also be observed in victims of other critical life events or catastrophes. According to the expert, whether one reacts particularly worried or blunted in view of the ever-increasing corona numbers also depends, for example, on the degree of personal concern and anxiety.

Finland lifts some corona restrictions ahead of schedule

Finland wants to lift some of the coronavirus restrictions early due to easing pressure on the healthcare system. “The burden on hospitals is still high, but the most severe cases are declining and there has been a turn for the better in intensive care units,” Health Minister Hanna Sarkkinen wrote on Twitter. From February 1st, the restrictions on events and companies will therefore be relaxed. As in the rest of Europe, new infections in Finland had recently increased significantly.
