Teachers Association: Tests and mask requirement in schools still necessary

The German Teachers Association believes that tests and a mask requirement in schools are still necessary at least at the beginning of the new school year. “We will still need measures in the autumn to secure, and in some cases also restrict, teaching operations,” said association president Heinz-Peter Meidinger of the “Passauer Neue Presse”. “We need a security phase at the beginning of the school year in order to react to people returning from traveling and the possible increased number of infections that may result, in which we again have to rely on regular tests and compulsory masks.” After the summer holidays, Germany will be “nowhere near as advanced as it is with adults when it comes to vaccinating children and young people,” said Meidinger. It is therefore to be expected that the highly contagious Delta variant will play a greater role with the schoolchildren.

Olympic city of Tokyo faces another state of emergency

During the Olympic Games, the corona emergency is said to prevail again in Tokyo. In view of the significantly increasing number of infections, the government is forced to take this step, as reported by the Japanese media. Prime Minister Suga wanted to announce his decision on the same day. The day before, the city administration had reported 920 new cases of infection. This is the highest level of new infections within 24 hours since May 13th. This means that the number of new infections for 18 days is above the value on the same day of the previous week. A cancellation of the Games does not seem to occur to Japan’s Olympic organizers or the IOC. The games are scheduled to open on July 23 – but possibly without spectators.

US researchers: Already four million corona deaths worldwide

Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than four million people have died after being infected with the coronavirus. That comes from data from the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. The number of globally known corona deaths rose from three to four million within just under three months. So far, there have been around 185 million confirmed infections with the virus worldwide, according to data from the university. Experts assume an even higher number of unreported cases for infections and deaths.
