The vaccine produced antibodies against all three human coronavirus types. The vaccine candidate is therefore an extension of the Sars-CoV-2 vaccine that has already been researched. The vaccine is scheduled to be tested on humans next year.

Lead author Kevin O. Saunders, deputy director of the Duke Human Vaccine Institute, sees “important progress” in the development of a broadly effective coronavirus vaccine. “These are pathogens that cause or can cause significant human infections and deaths, and a single vaccine that provides protection could slow or even prevent another pandemic,” says Saunders.
