The relationship came about through Prince Philip’s mother: the grandmothers of King Charles III. and Bernhard Margrave of Baden were sisters. The House of Baden was already represented at the coronations of George V (1865-1936) and Elizabeth II (1926-2022). Bernhard Margrave of Baden says: “Our family can now look back on a long tradition of taking part in coronation ceremonies.”
Prince Philip of Hohenlohe-Langeburg
The House of Hohenlohe-Langenburg in the district of Schwäbisch Hall has also been related to the British royal family for many generations. As a cousin, Philipp Prince of Hohenlohe-Langeburg (53) is the closest German relative of King Charles III. He will come to the coronation with his wife Saskia. He announces on his website: “My father told me very lively and impressed about his own experiences at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953.” Therefore, he and his wife are “full of anticipation to be able to be part of this historic event”. The prince further emphasizes: “A new royal age is heralded. King Charles III will continue to modernize the monarchy.” This will be reflected, among other things, in the “contemporary and significantly shorter course of the traditional, very long coronation ceremony”. For the House of Langeburg, this is the seventh coronation in the British royal family since 1821.
Philipp Fürst zu Hohenlohe-Langeburg was also one of the three German guests at Prince Philip’s funeral. At that time, Prince Heinrich Donatus of Hesse (56), the great-nephew of Queen Elizabeth II, was also invited.
Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier
And there is another promise from Germany: the Federal President will be present at the coronation as the representative of the Federal Republic.
