China was closed for three long years. The country had largely closed its borders to the outside world during the corona pandemic. Inside, the Communist Party pursued a zero-Covid policy while enforcing one of the world’s toughest lockdown policies. Completely surprising and practically without any preparation, the CP then declared an end to almost all restrictions at the beginning of December – shortly after nationwide demonstrations.
