The virologist Schmidt-Chanasit asked the short message service Twitter what these killer variants actually are. He has never heard this description for coronavirus mutations from the World Health Organization or other health authorities. The Bonn virologist Streeck made a similar statement in the online edition of the “Bild” newspaper. Lauterbach is causing panic, it was said.

The Federal Minister of Health had explained in the “Bild am Sonntag” that various omicron subvariants were just developing, which were a cause for concern for him. The intervals at which new variants replaced old ones were becoming shorter and shorter. It’s entirely possible to get a highly contagious omicron variant that’s as deadly as Delta.
