Virologist Fickenscher: Far higher corona numbers without mask discipline
The virologist Helmut Fickenscher still advises wearing a mouth and nose cover to protect against the corona virus. Obviously, the vast majority of citizens continue to attach importance to protecting themselves with masks, said the head of the Institute for Infectious Medicine at the University of Kiel of the German Press Agency. Even without a mask requirement, there is no reason to change behavior. “But if discipline should slacken, a rapid increase in the number of cases, not only for Covid-19 but also for the flu, can be expected.”
After the sharp increase in the number of cases as a result of the omicron variants BA.1 and BA.2 in December and January, it took a particularly long time in Schleswig-Holstein before a significant decrease could be observed. A further decline is to be expected in the course of spring and summer. With around 1,140 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days, Schleswig-Holstein was recently in the middle of the country table.

Violations of corona rules in Lower Saxony: fines in the millions
In Lower Saxony, the municipalities have since the introduction of the first corona protection measures more than 100,000 violations of the rules recorded. Most common violation: Disregarding the obligation to wear a mask. Immediately afterwards, the municipalities registered private meetings with too many people, according to a survey by the German Press Agency, in which more than 30 districts and independent cities took part. According to the company, almost 39,000 reports were received in the Hanover region, more than 10,000 for violations of the mask requirement and around 8,600 for group meetings. The fines amount to more than eight million euros, but not all the money has been received.

Ecumenical Way of the Cross in Lübeck again after the pandemic break
After a two-year break due to the pandemic, Christians of all denominations will meet again in Lübeck on Good Friday (April 15) for an ecumenical Way of the Cross. According to the North Church and the Archdiocese of Hamburg, around 800 participants are expected. They will parade through Lübeck’s old town with a wooden cross and remember the suffering and death of Jesus Christ at five stations with songs and prayers. In the past two years, the traditional event had only taken place virtually due to the corona restrictions. The Lübeck Way of the Cross was laid out in the 15th century and, according to church historians, is one of the oldest Ways of the Cross still in use in Germany.

Significantly more start-ups – Corona kink made up for
Many people in Germany implemented their self-employment plans that were put on hold during the Corona crisis last year. According to data from the state development bank KfW, 607,000 people realized their business start-up ideas. That was 70,000 or 13 percent more than in 2020. The start-up activity has thus left the Corona kink behind and has roughly reached the level of 2019, reported KfW Chief Economist Fritzi Köhler-Geib. In the past year, founders more often ventured into self-employment in order to take advantage of a business opportunity that arose. According to KfW, the proportion of these so-called opportunity start-ups rose to 82 percent (2020: 80 percent). The proportion of emergency start-ups fell to a low of 15 percent. Necessary founders are those who become self-employed due to a lack of better employment alternatives.

Lower Saxony did not transmit any figures at the weekend – the incidence fell
According to the Ministry of Health, Lower Saxony no longer transmits corona numbers to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Saturdays and Sundays. That is why the RKI cannot report any current figures for the largest northern German state today. The numbers are expected to be delivered later in the data for tomorrow. According to the ministry, the change has no effect on the value of the seven-day incidence. This remains up to date because its calculation is based on the reporting date, such as the positive result in a laboratory. The incidence is 1,214.8 today, down again from 1,257.5 yesterday and 1,508.8 a week ago.
