New doctors’ association wants to advance long-covid research

The German medical association Long Covid is to be founded in the coming week. The main goal of the association will be to promote interdisciplinary cooperation between doctors and medical auxiliary professions. The various clinical pictures after an actually overcome corona disease are still largely unexplored. “We now know more than 200 symptoms that are related to the so-called Long Covid Syndrome,” said Jördis Frommhold, chief physician at the Median Rehabilitation Clinic Heiligendamm, which now specializes in this clinical picture.

Scientists assume that around ten percent of all infected people are affected by Long Covid and then suffer from long-term consequences. According to the current RKI figures, that would be almost 700,000 people in Germany alone. One of the central symptoms is fatigue syndrome, which manifests itself with persistent tiredness and listlessness.

Weil warns: Omikron will hit the unvaccinated hard

Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil has expressed concern about the threat of the spread of the Omikron virus variant. The SPD politician again called for vaccinations to prevent the health system from becoming overburdened. “The best protection against the next wave is a high vaccination rate. Omikron will hit the unvaccinated particularly hard,” Weil told the German press agency. The booster vaccinations are also practically essential with a view to the virus variant. “The scientists assume that we will have a hard wave of infections in January. The problem is that this fifth wave is on top of the fourth wave,” explained Weil. Due to the sheer number of infections to be feared, an increasing burden on the health system is almost inevitable. “That is why the measures we are taking now are also preventive fire protection from Omikron.” Federal Health Minister Lauterbach (SPD) also warned of a massive fifth wave of infections yesterday after a meeting with Weil.

Nationwide new infection incidence drops to 321.8

The nationwide seven-day incidence fell again compared to the previous day. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) gave the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week this morning as 321.8. Exactly one week ago there were 53,697 infections. The number of reported infections has been falling for almost three weeks. However, due to the more contagious Omicron variant, experts fear an imminent trend reversal. According to the new information, 414 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours (previous week: 510). A total of 108,053 people have died in Germany in connection with a Sars-CoV-2 infection since the beginning of the pandemic. The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days was given by the RKI yesterday as 5.10 (Thursday: 5.17).
