Patient Protection Foundation calls for quick agreement on the Infection Protection Act

The German Foundation for Patient Protection is pushing for a quick agreement on the planned Infection Protection Act. Regulations for corona measures after March 19 are urgently needed so that the infection process cannot “accelerate unabated”. “For that you need a chancellor majority in parliament. That’s currently missing.” That’s what the board of directors of the foundation, Eugen Brysch, told the newspapers of the editorial network Germany (RND).

From March 20th, all more far-reaching protective measures, including the obligation to work from home, are to be phased out if the situation in the health system allows it. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) is currently working on a law that should make basic corona protection possible afterwards. Among other things, it is about the obligation to wear a mask and distance requirements. There should also be the possibility of additional measures in corona hotspots. The draft law is to be discussed in the cabinet on Wednesday or shortly thereafter. The new regulation must pass the Bundestag and Bundesrat in the coming week in order to be able to come into force in time on March 20th.

British study: Covid-19 can cause brain damage

A study by the University of Oxford considers it proven that corona disease can also lead to brain damage. Covid-19 could shrink the brain and reduce gray matter in the regions that control emotions and memory. The virus can also damage areas that control the sense of smell. Even people without a serious illness would have deteriorated brain functions in the areas responsible for concentration and organization. Whether this damage is permanent remains to be determined. The study, published in the journal Nature, looked at the brain changes in 785 subjects aged 51 to 81. Their brains were scanned twice. 401 of the people examined had contracted Covid between the two scans. At the time of the study, the alpha variant was dominant in Great Britain.

46 protective masks imported per inhabitant

In the corona pandemic, Germany bought billions of protective masks, mainly from China. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 3.8 billion pieces, such as FFP2 masks, with a total value of 841.3 million euros were imported into Germany last year. According to calculations by the Wiesbaden authorities, that was 46 masks per inhabitant. Average cost per mask when importing: 22 cents.

Almost 85 percent of these imports came from China: Germany ordered 3.2 billion masks worth 691 million euros from there. The second most important mask supplier was the United Kingdom with 173 million masks worth 56 million euros, followed by Turkey with 159 million masks for 24 million euros. At the same time, 669 million protective masks from German production with a total value of 285 million euros went abroad, mainly to Austria and Poland.
