The EU wants to finally bury the internal combustion engine from 2035. But the FDP continues to fight for an exception for e-fuels. What is actually going on here?

On Tuesday, the EU states are to comment on whether they support a ban on new registrations of combustion cars from 2035. However, the federal government has not yet been able to agree on a common position on this. The dispute ignited because, according to the latest EU compromise proposal, there should be no exception for cars that run on synthetic fuels (e-fuels). The FDP in particular is wearing itself out in this fight – Finance Minister Christian Lindner never tires of emphasizing that such an exception is not only in the interest of climate protection, but also of the entire German car and supplier industry. But is it really like that?
