The contraceptive pill and other contraceptives such as spirals are already available free of charge in France for under-25s. President Macron is now announcing a “small contraceptive revolution”.

Condoms will soon be available free of charge in pharmacies in France for young people between the ages of 18 and 25. “It will start on January 1st. This is a small contraceptive revolution,” announced French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday at an event on youth health, as the newspaper “Libération” reported. For almost a year, the contraceptive pill and other contraceptives such as an IUD have been free for under-25s in France. Previously, only underage girls in France could have the pill prescribed free of charge.

Macron also said that young people’s sexual health is an important issue. In particular, he addressed the vaccination of teenagers against papillomavirus infections, he did not rule out compulsory vaccination, as “Libération” reported. As for sex education, “we are not good in this area. The reality is very, very far from theory. We need to train our teachers better in this area, we need to raise awareness again,” said the head of state.
