After two years, Netflix has new episodes of the French hit series “Lupin” on offer. With almost the same ingredients. Because it’s not just the smart master thief who returns from exile.

Assane Diop wants Leaving France to start a new life. But the gentleman burglar wants to pull off a coup first: he wants to steal the famous and rare “Black Pearl”.

Two years have passed since the second season of the French hit series “Lupin” with the brilliant Omar Sy (“Pretty Best Friends”), now part three starts on Netflix on October 5th. Diop went into hiding. His son Raoul and Claire, his ex-partner and Raoul’s mother, are followed by the paparazzi and watched by the police. An untenable situation for Diop. He decides to return to Paris to leave France with them and start a new life somewhere else.

A new season – a new coup

But before that he plans a coup of the century: He wants to steal the famous “Black Pearl” of inestimable value from a jewelry store on the famous Place Vendôme in Paris – in front of the police. But then everything doesn’t go as planned. Because his mother has been kidnapped and her life is in danger.

Season three with seven episodes follows the same pattern as its previous seasons: grandiose stunts, disguises galore, thefts with clever scenarios that the gentleman burglar always manages with composure and a smile, and shots in the most beautiful corners of the capital .

Paris as a canvas

The series shows a postcard Paris: the Place Vendôme with its Victory Column, the Arc de Triomphe, the Eiffel Tower and magnificent townhouses. And again there are flashbacks that reveal important events and moments from Diop’s past. But this time a key figure appears in the hero’s life.

Inspired by the world-famous master thief Arsène Lupin, a more than 100-year-old fictional character by Maurice Leblanc, Netflix has also scored an international coup with its series. According to the company’s own information, around 76 million households followed the crook stories just four weeks after the first part was published on January 8, 2021. This made “Lupine” one of the most-watched non-English-language series on the streaming platform.

Part two was released a short time later in June 2021 – with not as much enthusiasm from critics and viewers. It remains to be seen how fans will react to the new sequel. After more than two years of waiting, the excitement is at least quite high.
