Consumption – still organic, but from the discounter – economy

The rising prices have not spoiled the appetite for organic food. “The good news is that organic remains stable and more stable than the food market as a whole,” said Tina Andres from the Bund Ökologische Lebensmittelwirtschaft (BÖLW). “Overall, the organic customers have remained loyal.” However, they have partially shifted their purchasing behavior and are increasingly buying organic products in discounters and supermarkets instead of in organic food stores. According to BÖLW, consumers in Germany spent 35 percent more on organic products in the first half of 2022 than in the first half of 2019. The vast majority of this is due to increases in sales volume, a smaller part to price developments, said Andres. This shows that there was a change in awareness in the Corona period towards more organic. The boom of the years 2020 and 2021 will not be reached at the moment. According to Andres, the Ukraine war has less of an impact on the organic sector than on the conventional food industry. The shelves in the health food store were always full. But what is noticeable are the rising energy prices and problems in the supply chains.
