Consumption at a record level: Germans drink more coffee

Coffee is the most popular drink among Germans, ahead of beer and mineral water. Despite the price increases in the food sector in recent months, coffee consumption continued to rise last year.

According to a market survey commissioned by the German Coffee Association, Germans are drinking more coffee than ever before. On average, consumers drink four cups of coffee a day. That’s a significant increase. The last survey last summer showed a per capita consumption of 3.8 cups. In 2021 it was 3.6 and in the pre-Corona year it was 3.5 cups a day.

According to the association, the elimination of the corona restrictions in gastronomy last year caused consumption to continue to rise. According to the survey, coffee is by far the most popular drink in Germany, ahead of mineral water and beer.

Coffee out of the house

In 2022, more roasted coffee was bought than ever before. “With 479,700 tons, sales of roasted coffee are at a record high,” says Holger Preibisch, Managing Director of the German Coffee Association in Hamburg. The big winner is the gastronomy. Because coffee consumption in the “out-of-home market” increased last year by around 45 percent compared to the previous year. “People finally want to get out of their own four walls, they finally want to drink coffee outside again,” says Preibisch.

Because fewer people were working from home in 2022, more coffee was drunk again on the way to work or during the lunch break at a business lunch. “Even the classic coffee break experienced a revival.”

Whole beans instead of powder

The second trend in the coffee market is the shift towards selling whole coffee beans. They accounted for as much as ground coffee sales last year, accounting for 44 percent (up 8 percent). For 2023, the coffee association expects that, for the first time, more “whole beans” will be sold than classic, ground roasted coffee. According to the association, every third household has a fully automatic coffee machine that grinds the coffee and makes the drink at the push of a button. Coffee pods have a market share of six percent, coffee capsules around five percent.
