Consequences of the storm: flooding in Franconia – train accident in Austria

Status: 07/09/2021 9:58 p.m.

The heavy rain continues to have consequences – currently especially in Franconia. Cellars there overflowed, streets were flooded. In Austria, a storm caused a train wagon to crash into a river. The passengers were lucky in the misfortune.

Many roads in southern Germany are flooded after heavy rains. Middle Franconia is particularly affected. The disaster was declared in the city of Ansbach and in the Neustadt an der Aisch-Bad Windsheim district. In Wilhermsdorf in the Fürth district, the electricity went out in many households due to the flood. There were also floods further north in Franconia – for example in the districts of Bamberg and Coburg.

Lake Constance region badly affected

In Baden-Württemberg, heavy rain last night caused flooding. One focus of the storm this time was the Lake Constance region.

Roads were closed in the Ravensburg district on Lake Constance, aquaplaning led to accidents, and cars got stuck in the water. Slopes slipped in several places. Floods were reported by the rivers Riß, Rems, Kocher and Jagst, among others.

Train derailed with students – wagon falls into river

In Austria, a storm had consequences that at first glance look much more dramatic than they actually are. There a regional train wagon crashed into a river after it hit parts of a tree.

Most of the children and teenagers on the train were sitting on the last day of school to collect their certificates. They were lucky for misfortune: there were only slightly injured and with mutual help everyone was able to free themselves from the overturned wagon, which was lying in the water of the river Mur.

“Children are more flexible than adults”

The accident occurred near Kendlbruck in the Salzburger Land. The cause of the accident was probably the root of a tree that was lying on the tracks after a curve, said operations manager Schilcher.

“There was a storm that night,” explained Schilcher. Fortunately, however, the Mur did not flood. “The car was not flooded.” According to Schilcher, there was another reason why the accident ended relatively mildly. Because the passengers were so young, there were no serious injuries or worse: “Children are more agile than adults.”
