The legendary cello master János Starker once said, with typical laconicism, that the musicians mostly played the way they looked. In the case of 29-year-old Anastasia Kobekina, this is ideally true: an amiable podium presence whose liveliness immediately captivates her. She moves on the cello with a delicate, slender body, nervous suppleness and wide-awake reactions. It doesn’t roar in the depths of the instrument and doesn’t shrill at the top; a touch of touching longing characterizes its playing. It almost goes without saying that she, the daughter of the composer Vladimir Kobekin, has won prizes, studied with great cello teachers such as Frans Helmerson, David Geringas and Jens Peter Maintz and that her talent was noticed at an early age. And that a modern cellist is a matter of course today historical performance practice is one of them.
