The H5N1 bird flu virus continues to spread among dairy cows in the United States. There are 34 herds in nine states according to official information affected. Given that there are almost 28,000 herds across the country, that may sound manageable. But so far the pathogen is spreading unchecked and the gaps in knowledge are still large. Experts are increasingly reacting with concern and criticism.
