When it comes to chips for artificial intelligence, the US company Nvidia is currently clearly ahead. But now Google and Intel want to catch up and are presenting new developments.
Intel and Google have introduced new chips for artificial intelligence (AI) with which they want to break Nvidia’s dominance in the fast-growing market. According to Intel, some AI systems can be trained 50 percent faster with the Gaudi 3 than with Nvidia’s H100 processor.
“First and foremost, our customers want more choice in the industry,” said Intel Vice President Jeni Barovian Panhorst. Google’s new chip variant TPU v5p is said to work twice as fast as the previous model. Customers get access to it via Google’s cloud services.
Alliance against Nvidia
After the announcement at the Vision trade fair, Intel shares rose by around one percent, Google parent Alphabet slightly less. Nvidia shares, on the other hand, fell by around three percent. The US group controlled about 83 percent of the corresponding data center market last year, while Google’s TPUs accounted for a large part of the rest.
An alliance is now also trying to break Nvidia’s dominance when it comes to the associated software. The market leader is not standing still either: in mid-March it introduced the Blackwell series with the B200 chip, which is intended to replace the H100 chip.
