It was a disaster with an announcement. They had made it clear in advance that at least the hard core of the vaccine opponents, pandemic harmless people and conspiracy believers would not adhere to the requirements for their rally and would go unannounced through the city without masks and announced repeatedly at the rally itself. Everyone knew that. Except the Munich police and the city apparently not. The result was a shameful spectacle in downtown Munich at night, more rabbits and hedgehogs than cats and mice.
But how it is when something goes completely wrong – you can also learn from a debacle. In this case: The scene must not be approached with naivety. Incidentally, this does not only apply to the police and the regulatory authorities. This also applies to stunned observers of the events. What happens in Munich and almost every day in many places is not the protest of concerned citizens.
The spokesmen are concerned with something other than the possible, but by no means democratically resolved, mandatory vaccination or even a fictitious “mandatory vaccination” that nobody, who is even halfway consoled, seriously considers. It is your concern, again and again, to delegitimize this state and its representatives. This will also be in the forums of the organizers and was formulated openly from the stage on Wednesday.
Which brings us to the others, the actual majority in the minority, as many demonstrators claim. Those who, by their own admission, only refuse to be vaccinated for themselves and their children. If they are as many as they say: why do those who despise democracy and misanthropists have such an easy game next to, in front of and in the midst of them?
It should be easy for a powerful “civil rights movement the likes of which the world has never seen” to stand up for the civil and human rights of true minorities. And not to cheer when the right to join forces is spoken.
Not looking the other way when the man and the woman next door make unspeakable Shoah comparisons. To contradict when politicians are denied humanity in Internet groups. And to go away when they see how openly conspiracy ideologues and right-wing extremists appear at rallies.
It may be that some of the demonstrators are currently still from the bourgeois camp and are actually only interested in the “good protest” and not in the chatter about the “resistance”. But why are they so willingly leaving the field to the others and not organizing – earlier protest movements have shown this impressively – even actions in which their concerns are actually expressed? If naivety is the reason, it can still take bitter revenge.
