Combined Olympic champion Vinzenz Geiger once again missed his first podium place this winter at the World Cup in Lahti despite a strong running performance. When the Austrian Johannes Lamparter won, the Oberstdorfer ran from twelfth place to fourth place after jumping and equalized his best result of the season.

“I’m very satisfied, I’m getting closer,” said Geiger on ZDF: “If I jump two or three meters further, I’ll be on the podium. That gives me hope.” The 26-year-old only failed to finish on the podium in his debut season in 2015/16.

At the finish, Geiger was 1:01.4 minutes behind former world champion Lamparter, who was just ahead of his compatriot Stefan Rettenegger (+0.1 seconds). Estonian Kristjan Ilves came third (+51.8). Norway’s top star Jarl Magnus Riiber was missing in Lahti; he took a break after winning the overall World Cup early.

Terence Weber (Geyer), fourth best German after jumping, fell back to seventh place and, as on Saturday when he came ninth, was unable to keep up with Julian Schmid on the cross-country ski trail. In the team sprint, Geiger and Manuel Faißt took third place with the victory of the Norwegians Jens Luraas Oftebro and Jörgen Graabak.

David Mach (Buchenberg) and Faißt (Baiersbronn), who were the only Germans on the individual podium this season, took 13th and 18th place, while Schmid (Oberstdorf) came 15th.

The jumping on Sunday was overshadowed by the serious injury to the Austrian Mario Seidl, who had to reach into the snow during his 136 m jump and was then taken to hospital. The 31-year-old, who had already torn his cruciate ligament during a long jump in 2019, was diagnosed with a fractured kneecap.
