Column from France: Why Germany is a topic of conversation in Paris

The French have recently been worried about their neighboring country – that’s not a good sign.

Ten months ago I moved to France (again). Paris, 17th arrondissement, there is a café on the corner, Alfredo is at the counter. Alfredo wears a black hat with a wide brim, leather bracelets and narrow silk scarves from the flea market. He looks a bit like the French version of a Latin American cowboy, probably on purpose since he lived there for a long time, Mexico, Argentina, Cuba… hence the “o” in his name.
