Coin Center, a group of crypto policy advocates in the United States. said it intends to “Proceed to help” for individuals affected by the Tornado Cash sanctions imposed by the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control, or OFAC.
Jerry Brito, Executive Director of Coin Center and Research Director Peter Van Valkenburgh charge OFAC called it a “legal violation” when Tornado Cash and 44 associated wallet addresses were included on the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list on Aug. 8. They are considering taking the matter to court.
“OFAC’s treatment of the code as an ‘person’ is beyond legal authority,” said Brito and Van Valkenburgh.
According to the pair, Coin Center will have discussions with OFAC before discussing the situation beyond the congressman’s briefing. The advocacy group will then assist individuals with funds attached to their Tornado Cash-connected wallet by applying for a token withdrawal license. “It cannot be said that Tornado Cash is a sanctioned person,” according to a Coin Center executive.
