With a huge dose of hope, fans of 1. FC Köln were excited to look forward to the last matchday of the 1st Bundesliga. But in the end Cologne couldn’t prevent relegation.

A lot of things would have had to be right for that to happen 1. FC Köln could have remained in the Bundesliga next season. But nothing happened. After a furious 33rd matchday, the cathedral city had hope until the end that they could somehow prevent relegation to the 2nd league. For this to happen, 1. FC Köln not only had to win, but 1. FC Union Berlin, which was threatened with relegation, should not have scored a single point.

Union Berlin saves itself with a penalty shot

None of this happened. 1. FC Köln clearly lost 1:4 to 1. FC Heidenheim, Union shot themselves out of the bottom of the table in the old Försterei with a very narrow 2:1 with a penalty shot in stoppage time.

VfL Bochum helped the Berliners: Werder Bremen won 4-1 against VfL. The Bochum team therefore has to go into relegation – and assert themselves against Fortuna Düsseldorf.

The Cologne team last played in the 2nd Bundesliga in the 2018/2019 season – and only needed a single attempt to fight their way back into the upper house. The upcoming season will be the cathedral city’s tenth stay in the 2nd Bundesliga.

VfB Stuttgart intercepts Bayern and is runner-up

Little surprising has happened at the top of the table: Bayer Leverkusen ended the season with 90 points without a single defeat and thus celebrated the championship in dominant fashion. Bayern Munich lost 2-4 to Hoffenheim, meaning the record champions couldn’t even save themselves into second place. VfB Stuttgart, who won 4-0 against Borussia Mönchengladbach in their last game and are now runners-up, came in behind Leverkusen.

This is a small miracle for the Stuttgart team, after the club was able to secure their stay in the upper house last season with great difficulty by relegation against Hamburger SV.
