Coalition wants to allow CO₂ storage – politics

A federal government has already burned its fingers by storing carbon dioxide underground, that was in 2010. At that time, a coalition of the Union and the FDP wanted to clear the way for this. But critics saw this as an attempt to extend the lifespan of German coal-fired power plants. Citizens’ initiatives were formed all over the country to prevent storage sites. In the end, the coalition still created a law. But it did not allow the controversial storage, but banned it.
