Coal is still important for electricity supply. But some power plants are currently being taken offline in order to achieve the phase-out by 2030. Whether they are really unnecessary and what alternatives there are.
Of all people, the Greens, as a coalition party, gave coal a small comeback in Germany, unexpectedly, after all, there was an energy crisis. It was also the reason why several coal-fired power plants were finally shut down at Easter – an important step towards a complete phase-out in 2030. The energy supply is secured, said Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck, and the affected power plants are “now superfluous and can finally be taken off the grid”.
