She left Afghanistan in the same way as the countless desperate people who are currently trying to flee their country: Clarissa Ward, chief reporter for the US news channel CNN, left Kabul with a military machine. “On our flight, ready to take off,” Ward wrote on Twitter to one on Friday Photo showing the interior of an overcrowded US Air Force transport plane. Before that, she and many other hours had waited for a flight. In the days after the Afghan capital fell to the Taliban, Ward was one of the few foreign journalists to continue reporting from Kabul; German broadcasters, for example, currently have no reporters on site. She asked citizens of the city about their expectations and sometimes even spoke to armed members of the Taliban. The 41-year-old wore a black hijab during these missions, despite her strict disguise and despite a permit to report from the streets of Kabul, her team was recently repeatedly harassed at work. On Saturday, the journalist also reported via Twitter that she had landed in Doha together with 300 refugees. “We’re the lucky ones,” wrote Ward.
