According to a scientific study, the number of heavy rain events in Bavaria will increase significantly. This is the result of an international research group led by geography professor Ralf Ludwig at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and the Freiburg hydrologist Manuela Brunner. Heavy rain, as it occurred on average every 50 years from 1961 to 2000, will therefore occur twice as often from 2060 to 2099. Particularly intense heavy rain, like the one that occurred on average every 200 years between 1961 and 2000, will in future be up to four times more frequent in the Free State. The researchers published the results of their study in the journal Communications Earth & Environment. According to the information, the researchers have examined 78 upstream catchment areas around Inn, Danube and Main in the Free State and analyzed which extreme precipitation events are likely to lead to devastating floods. Based on this data, the scientists developed hydrological simulations for Bavaria during the climate crisis.
