Climate alert, towards the end of the puffs and new Cada in Saint-Brevin

Did you miss the news this morning? We have put together a summary to help you see things more clearly.

In the middle of COP28 in Dubai, scientists have once again issued a red alert on the climate. It is “now inevitable” that the threshold of 1.5°C of global warming will be exceeded “constantly over several years” and there is a one in two chance that this will happen in just seven years, lamented Tuesday scientists from the Global Carbon Project, who are calling for action. According to this reference study presented at the UN climate meeting, CO2 emissions produced by the use of coal, gas and oil in the world are expected to reach a new record in 2023. In 2015, with the Paris Agreement treaty, world leaders set themselves the objective of not exceeding the threshold of +1.5°C to avoid repeated heat waves and profound, even irreversible, changes inflicted on nature through human action.

Disposable e-cigarettes could soon disappear. The National Assembly unanimously adopted on Monday at first reading a text to ban “puffs”, a first step which will still have to be confirmed by Brussels. Popular with a young public, inexpensive, multicolored and with flavors of strawberry ice cream, watermelon, or chocolate… they offer a certain number of puffs for a nicotine level of between 0 and 20 mg/ml, which “opens the path to strong dependence”, especially among minors, denounced the Minister of Health Aurélien Rousseau. The National Academy of Medicine also describes these electronic cigarettes as a “sneaky trap for children and adolescents”.

The town hall held firm despite the pressure. The first families moved into the new reception center for asylum seekers (Cada) in Saint-Brevin-les-Pins (Loire-Atlantique) on Monday, we learned from the prefecture, confirming information from the newspaper West France. The site will ultimately accommodate 110 people. Far-right demonstrations have continued in this quiet seaside resort since the transfer was made official at the end of 2021. The former mayor, Yannick Morez, the target of threats and whose car was set on fire at his home, resigned in May.
