Citizenship elections in Bremen: BIW feeds on the disappointment of the voters

With the citizenship election in Bremen, for the first time in 10 years, a state election was held without the AfD – to the delight of the party “Bürger in Wut”. The left shines thanks to its top candidate.

For the first time in almost ten years, a state election will take place without the AfD. But their voters have found a new address for their protest: The double-digit result of the citizens in anger (BIW) is mainly based on voter flows from the AfD.

Disappointment as a motive

Even if the party itself attaches importance to being conservative but not radical, and wants to clearly differentiate itself from the AfD, it serves the same audience – an electorate, the majority of whom do not vote out of conviction for certain political offers, but out of disappointment about the other parties. In the election day survey by Infratest dimap, two-thirds of BIW voters stated that disappointment was their motive.

Left could almost keep the election result

It is also noteworthy that the left, after its first participation in a state government in West Germany, was able to almost maintain its election result from four years ago. And this despite the fact that the federal party is divided and has no profile.

The party owes the result to its top candidate and Senator for Economic Affairs, Kristina Vogt. For a quarter of Die Linke voters, their person was the main reason for supporting the party. Almost half of the people in Bremen would like the left to remain involved in the government.

Bremen’s Green Party top candidate Schaefer admitted that the party was unable to get its message across during the election campaign.

Different election procedure in Bremen

While the first projections can usually be expected from around 6:15 p.m. for state elections, the procedure in Bremen takes longer.

The 24-page election booklets, in which you can allocate your five votes to parties and individuals as you wish, are collected in counting centers in Bremen and Bremerhaven. Infratest dimap does not expect the first trends from these counts, which then form the basis for an extrapolation, until well after 8 p.m.
