Ciaran, Fiona, Idris… How do we choose the names of storms?

Tammy, Fiona, Idris and soon Ciaran… No, these are not the most given names in 2023 but those given to storms. Giving a name to these extreme phenomena makes it possible to better identify them and ensure better prevention by allowing the populations concerned to better remember the risks and safety instructions. The French, Spanish, Portuguese, Belgian and Luxembourg meteorological services have agreed to standardize the naming of depressions which risk causing a wind alert of at least orange level in one of these 5 countries. As explained by Météo-France on his website, the meteorological service which plans to first issue the orange or red alert assigns a name to this stormy depression from the pre-established list and informs the others. If the storm first affects Ireland, Great Britain or the Netherlands, the name chosen by these weather services is used.
