Christoph Ransmayr’s stories: “When I was still immortal” – Culture

Christoph Ransmayr’s greatness lies in a narrative that doesn’t allow itself any weaknesses and doesn’t shy away from pathos. Stories from four decades reveal his cosmos.

The Ransmayr tone unmistakably resonates in all of these texts: precise observations, rich in thought, always able and willing to make extensive associations. Even in the “small” forms of narrative, anecdote and satire, there is nothing careless or sloppy in Ransmayr’s work, not even in what he wrote in bound speech. Just as he never rambles on casually in many interviews, there are certainly no categories of light, cheerfully funny or even frivolous in his writing.
