Christmas around the world: From lottery winners and happy garbage collectors

Shortly before Christmas, there was anything but calm in many places around the world: the storm “Zoltan” blew through Germany and parts of Europe. The fire brigade had to be deployed in many places, and there was a storm surge in northern Germany – and a number of trains were canceled across the country. There was, once again, chaos at Deutsche Bahn.

The traditional journey home for many people in Germany to their families was in some cases impossible or at least difficult on Friday. They couldn’t start their journey by train at first and were now hoping for better luck on Saturday. Others preferred to switch to cars straight away. But that too was often difficult: the ADAC reported traffic jams on motorways in all directions.

Lotto winners for Christmas in Spain

In Spain, on the other hand, there was unadulterated joy, at least among the winners of the big Christmas lottery “El Gordo”, for which the winning numbers were drawn this Friday. Many people watched the drawing patiently on television screens. It took a good four hours until the main prize was drawn: four million euros minus taxes.

While in Europe Christmas is deeply rooted in traditions as a Christian family celebration, in some Asian countries it is an opportunity for chic parties among young people. In Japan, couples like to go to fine restaurants at Christmas; you have to make a reservation well in advance to get a seat.

Our photo series is a journey around the world with randomly selected stops just before the start of Christmas.
