Christian Thielemann becomes music director of the Berlin State Opera – Culture

So now it’s out: Christian Thielemann has a new job, he will be the new music director of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, as the successor to Daniel Barenboim, who resigned at the beginning of the year for health reasons after 30 years at this house. This has now been announced by Berlin’s new Senator for Culture, Joe Chialo (CDU). The whole thing is no surprise, as many observers of the classical music scene had expected this decision. Because Barenboim called Thielemann for help a year ago when he had to cancel an Asian tour and Richard Wagner’s four-part film “The Ring of the Nibelung.” As a result, rumors wanted to know that both the Staatskapelle working in the Linden Opera and Barenboim had spoken out in favor of Thielemann as his successor. But now it is official that he is going to the State Opera and there is great rejoicing in Berlin. But is he the right man for this position?
