Historic false start in the USA, defeat against “Garfield” in Germany: “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” gets off to a weak start in cinemas.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” is anything but a furious start in cinemas. The spin-off of the end-time action series has fallen short of expectations since its debut at the end of last week – both in Germany and in the UNITED STATES.

“Furiosa” can’t beat “Garfield” in Germany

In Germany, “Furiosa” cannot beat “Garfield – An Extra Portion of Adventure” – even though the children’s film has been in cinemas for two weeks. The post-apocalyptic spectacle with Anya Taylor-Joy (28) and Chris Hemsworth (40) has attracted 86,000 visitors in this country since Thursday. “Garfield” sold 98,000 tickets in the same period.

In terms of sales in euros, Furiosa ranks Figures presented by “Blickpunkt: Film” before the animated cat. According to the industry magazine, it was the weakest cinema weekend of the year overall.

Historic false start on holiday weekend in the USA

In the USA, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” also seems to be a flop – despite being released on a long weekend. In the United States, Memorial Day is being celebrated this Monday (May 27th). Every last Monday in May, soldiers who died in war are remembered.

Since its release on Friday, “Furiosa” has only grossed 25.6 million US dollars in the USA up to Sunday. According to forecasts, the prequel to “Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) will gross 31 million dollars over the long weekend, including today’s US holiday. Experts had previously expected around 50 million over the four days.

The action film, which was celebrated at the Cannes Film Festival, was just ahead of “Garfield” until Sunday. The latter’s cinema adventure has only just opened in the USA – and has grossed 24.8 million dollars. Tomorrow, Tuesday, it will be revealed which of the films had the best debut on the Memorial Day weekend. Experts are also expecting a result of around 31 million dollars for “Garfield”.

Regardless of whether it’s “Furiosa” or “Garfield”: the winner over the long weekend would be the weakest top opening of a Memorial Day since 1995. Back then, “Casper” only got 22 million. A disaster for a $168 million film like “Furiosa.”
