During a press conference before SC Freiburg’s home game against FC Bayern Munich, coach Christian Streich launched a social criticism. Targets included large corporations and social media.

Trainer Christian Streich from the Bundesliga club SC Freiburg regrets what he believes is the constantly increasing pressure in society. Football has always been “an expression of society as a whole,” said the 57-year-old when, in the press conference before the Freiburg home game against FC Bayern Munich (Saturday, 3:30 p.m. / Sky), he gave his opinion on the many coaching layoffs in recent weeks and months was asked. “The pressure is immense, but the pressure in society is also immense,” said Streich. “Many people still love football very much, even if there are phenomena that are catastrophic.”

Christian Streich: Many people no longer get warmth

This also applies to social developments. “We live in a world of large corporations,” said Streich. “The medium-sized companies have it incredibly difficult, and they have brought us this incredible prosperity, not the large corporations, they often destroy it.” That can also be applied to football.

All in all, there are many people with psychological problems, “because they are totally overwhelmed, no longer get any warmth and there are no longer any points of reference,” Streich began with a general criticism. That is “worrying”. And social media would play a crucial, negative role in that. “People weren’t any better in the past, not a whit,” he emphasized, “but if I know someone personally, I think about insulting them.”

At SC Freiburg, “continuity and liabilities” have ensured for many years that it cannot be compared to other clubs. But the current Bundesliga fourth is ultimately an ever-growing “company,” said Streich. “A crucial point will be how we deal with the growth.” Christian Streich has been the head coach of SC Freiburg since January 2012. In Europe, only Diego Simeone has been in charge longer as Atlético Madrid coach.
