Champions League: PSG snatches its qualification for the quarters after a draw against Bayern Munich

Virtually eliminated for a few minutes, after Ajax Amsterdam’s stunning victory against AS Roma (2-1), PSG Women was able to save its lead in the Champions League down to the wire in Munich (2-2). Yet jostled and technically imprecise for a long time, the Parisiennes snatched a saving draw against Bayern, to secure first place in Group C. They will thus avoid a big chunk (Chelsea, Barça or OL) during the draw next Tuesday in Nyon, Switzerland, and will have the advantage of receiving in the return match.

If the first clear opportunity was in Paris, with a too-cross shot from Sandy Baltimore (16th), PSG gradually retreated in the face of pressure from a much more aggressive, and technically better, German team. After a vicious shot from Sydney Lohmann just wide (26th) and a save from Constance Picaud in front of Lea Schüller (35th), Paris gave in on a set piece. From a corner, Clare Hunt was dominated with a header by Glodis Perla Viggosdottir, whose delivery benefited a lonely Giulia Gwinn (36th). Bayern could even have made the break before the break, and maintained their hold after returning from the locker room.

A goal disallowed for Bayern at the last minute

The first Parisian shot on target, signed Grace Geyoro on a shift from Sandy Baltimore (53rd), initiated a timid start, and Tabitha Chawinga, opportunistic to exploit a bad back pass from Katharina Naschenweng, equalized (73rd). A small hold-up that Bayern quickly managed. Two minutes later, Sydney Lohmann dominated Jade Le Guilly on a cross from Klara Bühl to restore the advantage to the Bavarians (75th).

Long non-existent, PSG however accelerated in the final moments. Under the threat of elimination, with the overthrow of Ajax against AS Rome, the Parisiennes were released on a billiard shot, when a shot from Sandy Baltimore, deflected by Amalie Vangsgaard, was deflected into her goal by Georgia Stanway (88th). After a goal denied to Bayern in the final moments for offside, Paris was able to breathe for good.
