Champions League: Bitter end for Bayern women against Roma

The FC Bayern footballers lost an opening win in their difficult Champions League group.

In the duel between the title holders from Germany and Italy, coach Alexander Straus’ team gave up a two-goal lead against AS Roma and had to be content with a 2-2 (2-0).

Jovana Damjanovic (21st) from close range and Elena Linari with an own goal (45th + 4) scored for FC Bayern in a balanced first half to give them a seemingly reassuring lead.

After the break, Evelyne Viens (58th) brought the Romans close again after a quick switch game. The game went back and forth as a result, Linda Dallmann (72nd) and Sydney Lohmann (87th) missed great chances to decide – before Manuela Giugliano (90th + 1) ice-coldly equalized for Roma.

In the strong Group C, in addition to Rome, the top French team Paris St. Germain and Ajax Amsterdam are Bayern’s women’s opponents.

Rome equalizes: Despite a good phase for Bayern, the score is 2-2. Giugliano finishes in the penalty area, Grohs deflects the ball forward. But the rebound ends up again at Giugliano, who nets the equalizer, which from Bayern’s perspective is bitter but not undeserved.

That has to be it! Bühl asserts himself strongly on the right side and crosses to the second post. Lohmann runs in there and closes the door. But Minami gets her leg in the way at the last second and clears it for a corner. The only irritating thing is that Lohmann laughs afterwards. Or is this gallows humor? As a reminder: When Nico Schlotterbeck chatted and grinned with the Frenchman before Dayot Upamecano’s first goal in Borussia Dortmund’s 4-0 defeat against Bayern, the German international was hit in the face afterwards.

Lina Magull made a comeback in the 80th minute. The German international has been missing in recent weeks due to injury and is now coming into the game for Dallmann.

15 minutes before the end the hosts are still leading 2-1. Rome will certainly try to get an equalizer.

After Munich lost the ball, Rome quickly switched gears and scored to make it 1-2. Giugliano drives the ball through the middle and sends Viens into the penalty area at the right moment. The striker can push into the right corner from a half-left position.

Despite the guests’ good initial phase, Bayern almost increased their lead to 3-0. Lea Schüller comes to the end after a long ball, which is defused just before the line.

The first minutes after the break clearly belong to the Italians. They keep putting Bayern under pressure and create smaller chances.

Rome kicks off the second half. Both teams remain unchanged for the time being.

In stoppage time, Bayern increased their lead to 2-0 – and with a little luck! Bühl passes the ball to Naschenweng on the edge of the penalty area. This closes and hits Linari, who involuntarily deflects into the goal. Bayern go into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Dallmann comes to a good finish in the penalty area in the second minute of added time. But the ball flutters a few meters past the target.

The Italians are concentrating more on the right side in attack. Shortly before the break they got a good finish with Haavi, who only missed the goal by a few meters.

The hosts try to playfully get through the middle, but are often too imprecise to get dangerously towards the goal.

After going behind, AS Roma increased the number of shots and took control of the game and had a very dangerous chance thanks to Feiersinger’s shot.

After 20 minutes, Bayern took the lead: After a free kick, Viggosdottir came through strongly and passed the ball to Damnjanovic, who was able to make it 1-0.

The game is very intense in the first 15 minutes. Bayern controlled the game without creating any significant chances. Roma is waiting for quick transition moments.

After ten minutes, Bayern have their first chance to score. Lea Student processes a cross and passes it to Dallmann. Dallmann’s shot is not dangerous on goal.

In the first five minutes, the Munich team increasingly relied on early pressing to force Rome to lose the ball.
