A ceasefire in the Gaza war is still not in sight due to incompatible positions: Hamas says it is sticking to its demands – these include, in addition to a comprehensive ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza and the return of the displaced people. The terrorist organization blamed Israel for the failure of the negotiations so far.
Israel, in turn, has always rejected a withdrawal and a permanent ceasefire – both points are incompatible with the war goal of completely destroying Hamas. At the same time, the country is trying to reach an agreement to free the hostages who have been in the hands of the Islamist terrorist organization since October.
On Monday there were media reports that Israel had agreed to release hundreds more Palestinian prisoners than initially planned during negotiations between the mediating states of Qatar, Egypt and the USA. However, this concession is not enough for Hamas.
USA: Vote “not binding”
The United Nations Security Council passed a resolution on Monday calling for an immediate ceasefire. “Failure would be unforgivable,” warned UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
However, the resolution went unheard by the warring parties: it was “not binding,” said John Kirby, communications director of the US National Security Council – although this statement does not apply under international law. The USA abstained from voting in the UN Security Council.
