Winston Churchill once called his American friend Harry Hopkins “Lord Root of the Matter”. On a somewhat more modest level in terms of world history, Lower Saxony’s CDU state chief Bernd Althusmann now describes Friedrich Merz as a “man of clear words”. And with that he expressed exactly the feeling that moved an absolute majority of the voting CDU members to finally promote the Sauerlander to where he believed he was right in the third attempt: into the chairmanship of the Christian Democrats.
