On Thursday, a car transporter caught fire on the A7 between the Hannover-Nord triangle and the Großburgwedel exit. The freeway has been closed southbound for several hours.
According to a police spokeswoman, the cause of the fire that broke out at noon was a burst tire. As a result, the tractor caught fire and the flames spread to the loaded vehicles. According to the information, the truck driver noticed the bursting of the tire and drove the van to the side in a controlled manner. He was unharmed. The local fire brigades from Mellendorf, Elze, Bissendorf and Gailhof brought the fire under control, according to information from NDR Lower Saxony.
Hours of traffic jam towards Hanover
It was initially unclear how long the freeway would remain closed. As a result of the fire and the clean-up work, traffic was backed up on the A7 towards Hanover. At times, the traffic stood on a length of twelve kilometers. The alternative routes were also overloaded. No information was available on Thursday evening about the extent of the damage.
