Candle arches from Saxony: pride made of wood – panorama

Candle arches and wooden pyramids are not only export hits in Saxony, but also ambassadors for a region that is currently not always doing well. Visiting woodworkers who create identity – just what kind of one?

If you look outside through the roof window of Ringo Müller’s workshop, you can see a bit of snow. The snow may thaw, but as long as it lies there it is important, because his craft only looks perfect in the light of the snow. For example, the fragile-looking little fir tree made of wood, which Müller carefully cradles in his hands. “A trademark of our manufacture,” he says. Before this piece of wood looks the way it should look, it has to be sawn, turned and glued. Handcrafted. This is how it has been made since 1950, when Müller’s father first created this type of tree. Once all the individual parts have been produced, they are placed on a pyramid or a candle arch, then packed in cardboard boxes and finally transported back to the daylight hundreds of times under wrapping paper for Christmas.
