Canal+ claims 7 million euros from a farm worker for a hack

The compensation requested on Monday by the Canal Plus group to a farm worker from Loudun, in Vienne, for a computer hack is colossal since it amounts to more than 7 million euros. The New Republic precise that the group is claiming this sum for putting its content online via a streaming website between 2019 and 2020.

Battle over audiences for online content

The amount of damage is calculated in particular on the basis of a Médiamétrie survey which recorded 1.495 million unique visits to the site in just over a year. It also takes the monthly cost of a subscription (109 euros) and “it is weighted by the penetration rate of Canal + estimated at 15%”, specifies The New Republic. Canal+ is also asking for 15,000 euros in moral damages and nearly 30,000 euros which would correspond to the advertising fallout for the hacker.

For its part, the council of the agricultural worker questions the supposed audiences of the content put online by its client and denounces a delusional amount.

The court will deliver its decision in this case on September 18, 2023.
