Calvin Bulgrin: From singing bus driver to click millionaire

Calvin Bulgrin’s story sounds almost like a fairy tale: a bus driver releases a song – and suddenly a big record label comes knocking. On the way there, however, the 27-year-old suffered a number of setbacks.
From rags to riches – that’s not quite the case with Calvin Bulgrin. Nevertheless, the bus driver from near Lübeck could achieve a similar fairytale rise: his song “California Diva”, released at the end of July, achieved more than 1.67 million views in less than four weeks.
Even record giant Sony pricked up their ears and bought the song without further ado. Now the piece is to be marketed professionally, a video shoot is currently taking place on Timmendorfer Strand, as the “Lübecker Nachrichten” reports with pride. In an interview with the daily newspaper, Bulgrin is already dreaming of television.

It wouldn’t be his first time. Because it all started with an appearance on “Deutschland sucht den Superstar”: In January 2021, a then 25-year-old appeared on the RTL casting show. At the time, however, he was unable to impress the jury around Dieter Bohlen with his singing performance, which may have been due to his appearance: Bulgrin appeared as a Pietro Lombardi lookalike. The singer from Schleswig-Holstein always emphasized that it was not an imitation, but a parody. But that wasn’t enough for the judges: they showed him the red card in the first round.
The father of a three-year-old daughter was also rebuffed on the “Take me Out” dating show. In March of this year he tried his luck, but his Pietro Lombardi scam didn’t work there either.
However, the 27-year-old was not discouraged by this and drew his own conclusions: Bulgrin is now focusing on his own strengths instead of parodying others. He brought his buddies Juls and DJ Tobey Nize on board. On July 22, the three released the song “California Diva” – and hit the bull’s eye.
