Several employees at a call center in Zapopan, Mexico, have been missing since last week. Now investigators in the neighboring town are making a grisly discovery. They find human remains of women and men in plastic bags.

A search for seven missing call center employees in Mexico has found 45 plastic bags containing human remains. The public prosecutor’s office for the state of Jalisco announced on Facebook the evening before (local time) that it was not yet known whether it was actually the missing persons. Body parts of both women and men were found – how many people they belonged to has yet to be investigated.

A first plastic bag was discovered on Tuesday on a 40-meter-deep slope north of the metropolis of Guadalajara. Since the area is difficult to walk on, the salvage work would continue in the following days, it said.

Since last week, two women and five men who worked in a call center in Zapopan, the neighboring city of Guadalajara, have been searched for. It is not yet clear why they disappeared. The public prosecutor’s office announced that the search for the missing persons would continue as long as the identity of the dead in the plastic bags was not clarified.

Mexico has been suffering from a wave of violence for years. Numerous drug cartels and other criminal groups fight for control of areas of influence, smuggling routes and protection money. They often have ties to corrupt politicians and security forces. Last year, almost 32,000 homicides were registered in the Latin American country with around 126 million inhabitants.
