In view of the high gas prices, the cabinet has decided on a one-off payment for gas customers worth billions. For them, there is no down payment in December, and there is no taxation.

The federal cabinet has decided on a one-off payment for gas customers worth billions. According to Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), gas customers do not have to make a down payment in December, instead the federal government will bear the costs. “The emergency aid is coming!” he tweeted.

Households and smaller companies receive the one-off relief payment to cushion the high gas prices. According to a paper, the federal government anticipates costs of nine billion euros for the emergency aid. Taxation was waived, partly because of the bureaucracy involved.

However, higher earners will have to pay tax on the second stage of the relief planned for March at the latest. The plan is to cap a basic quota of 80 percent of annual consumption at a price per kilowatt hour of twelve cents. If you earn more than 75,000 euros a year, you have to pay taxes on the benefit.

Tenancy: Relief with utility bills

The following is planned for tenancies: According to the paper, the relief for the landlord is to be passed on to the tenants with the utility bill for 2022. Tenants who have already made increased advance payments for operating costs since spring 2022 are to be released from the obligation to pay the increased amount in December.

In the case of new contracts, it can be assumed that discounts adjusted to the current energy costs have already been agreed. “Here, in December 2022, the tenant will be released from the obligation to pay the deduction at a fixed rate.”

The government thus adopted a proposal from the Gas Commission. The relief measure is now to be introduced in the Bundestag. The relief is to be financed from the Economic Stabilization Fund.
