Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund and top talent coach Otto Addo are ending their collaboration, originally scheduled to run until 2025, early at the end of the season. The Westphalians announced on Friday that the 48-year-old ex-BVB professional had asked to terminate his contract and that the club was complying with this request. The Hamburg native’s next stop has already been decided: Addo will return to the Ghanaian national team and receive a long-term contract as head coach.

The coach had already looked after the Black Stars on the sidelines in a dual role between February and December 2022. At the World Cup in Qatar, Ghana under Addo’s leadership narrowly failed in a strong group with Uruguay, South Korea and Portugal. Under the leadership of Chris Hughton, the national team was last winless at the 2024 Africa Cup and was kicked out in the preliminary round. According to the club’s statement, BVB will release Addo at short notice for the coming international period, after which the talent coach will continue his work in Dortmund until the summer. Addo has been under contract with the Black and Yellows since 2019.

Otto Addo spoke in a TM interview in 2022 about his dual role at Ghana and BVB.

“I know that for Otto, despite his long-standing connection to BVB, the national team was always something very special. We have already supported him in the past to be able to work for his country and we definitely don’t want to deny him the chance to become head coach. In Otto we will lose an excellent coach and great person. Nevertheless, I am happy for him and am sure that he will give his best for BVB until the summer and that we will remain in close contact beyond that,” explained Borussia Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl.

“It wasn’t easy for me to make this decision, but I am very grateful and happy that those responsible at BVB made this step possible for me. It is not a given that I was able to work for the Ghanaian Football Association alongside my job in Dortmund. I appreciate very much! Borussia Dortmund will always remain something special for me – this is where I celebrated my greatest successes as a player and also experienced an incredible amount as a coach. I will definitely miss my colleagues, the boys, the club and the fans,” said Addo and added:

“Being able to take on the role of head coach of my national team is a great privilege. As an interim coach, I have already gained intensive experience in this role and am looking forward to the task that lies ahead of me starting in the summer. Until then, I will continue to give full throttle for BVB and will certainly remain closely connected to the club afterwards.”
